Test drove a 2014 Ford Fiesta 1.0L – Smoke from bonnet, should we be worried?

Hi all,

My girlfriend and I recently went to test drive a 2014 Ford Fiesta 1.0L Titanium automatic with 38,000 miles on the clock. During the drive, we noticed some smoke coming from the bonnet. We pulled over to check it out, and since we were only a short distance from the dealership, we carefully drove it back. When we got there, the car started smoking a lot more. We opened the bonnet, and the dealer said it was a coolant pipe that had come loose and reassured us it was just steam. He promised to sort it out and even offered to extend the warranty.

My girlfriend really liked the car and ended up putting a deposit down as it would be her first car. But after we got home, I did a bit of research and spoke to a few mechanics. Some suggested it could be a head gasket issue, which got me a bit worried. I’ve asked the dealer for a video showing exactly where the problem occurred.

The dealership seems genuine, has decent reviews online, and the car itself is in great condition otherwise. They’re asking £7,500 for it. The only thing is, my dad has always told me to be cautious when buying a used car, especially from dealers in Birmingham, so that’s playing on my mind.

Has anyone here experienced something similar? Should we be worried about this issue, or are we overthinking it? The car drove really well otherwise, and we’re wondering if we’re making the right choice. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Cheers!

1-liter EcoBoost engines and Birmingham raise some red flags.

I can’t tell if this is a joke or serious, but if it’s the latter, I wouldn’t feel comfortable buying this car at all.

£7.5k and unidentified smoke coming from the bonnet? You’re being done.

He won’t sort out shit. Don’t buy it.

I believe white smoke is usually related to coolant issues.

But if everything’s fine, there shouldn’t be any smoke. Why is that pipe loose in the first place? Did they work on it and fail to reassemble it properly? What prompted the work—was it a complete engine rebuild or just a poorly done radiator replacement? You can never be too sure.

And definitely steer clear of Birmingham; look elsewhere.

Also, be sure to check out the Ford Ecoboost problems and Powershift issues.

A colleague of mine had a very similar thing happen with his fiesta, it was the coolant supply to the turbo that had rubbed through and making steam and water.

Funny enough a car isn’t a chimney and it’s not meant to smoke from the bonnet.

You dun goofed
