I have a 2017 Ford Fiesta. 89k miles. I have been to 49/50 states with it. I change every 5-7k. I have gone to like 15 different places for oil changes and always just said to just give me the cheapest one. I have an oil change scheduled tomorrow and it was higher than I’m used to so I asked about it. They said my manual requires a 5W-20 full synthetic. I have literally never paid attention to this and usually just get conventional or a blend. We are talking a price difference of $48 vs $102. My warranty is already way expired. I haven’t seen any issues. Can I still continue with the cheaper blend option or should I really only be getting the more expensive synthetic at this point?
The Motorcraft (Ford brand) oil is a synthetic blend, and that’s what they would use at the dealership. As long as you’re staying on top of routine oil changes, you should be good.
How often do you get an oil change?
I have 175,000 miles on my 2011 Fiesta. I have used Motorcraft 5W-20 synthetic blend since the beginning (local dealer changed oil up to 30,000 miles. I’ve done the remainder). I change my oil every 5,000 miles and have had 35 oil changes performed thus far. I religiously track all my maintenance and I’ve done most of it myself since roughly ~2014.
My engine is in pretty good shape. Did plugs and wires at 130,000 miles and they just had general browning. Absolute worst thing I’ve had to deal with was a secondary O2 sensor going out.
For synthetic blend do not go higher than 3k miles or full synthetic do not go higher than 5k miles.
Motorcraft makes a full synthetic too. Little bit harder to find. Before I started doing my ma’s car oil, that’s what they’d use in her renegade.
But her '17 fiesta, just synthetic blend motorcraft.
The majority of the Ford fleet uses the synthetic blend and that’s what you’ll find on the shelf in pretty much every auto parts store. I should have elaborated.
I’ve only used full synthetic in mine, and the engine looks spotless, even with a few delayed oil changes.
