Need a cheap runner until the summer and found quite a few Ford fiestas in my budget on auto trader.
I’ll start working in August so will have a bigger budget to upgrade to something nicer but for now just need something that gets me from A-B and doesn’t cost a fortune to insure (passed my test recently).
What are the pitfalls to look out for when buying something used (10+ years) and more specifically what to look out for in ford fiestas.
You can still get Ford parts anywhere here in Malaysia (my family drives Fords), but the issue with the Fiesta sold here is that it was built in Thailand for the mass market when Ford focused on the ASEAN region. The gearbox paired with the 1.6 was problematic (the European version had a 4-speed automatic).
The facelifted 1.5 and the 1.0T were a bit better, but they still used the same gearbox.
My relative has a Fiesta XTR, which is a special edition, but it’s also a 1.6 automatic. It drives really well—the handling and feel are fantastic. He left it with me since he works out of town, and I occasionally drive it just to keep it warmed up, but it’s not in the best condition.
If you really want a Fiesta, keep in mind that the gearbox requires good maintenance. You can buy them cheap, giving you extra cash for upkeep. The low price reflects the lack of value, but don’t skip on maintenance, and the car should be fine. Also, check out Facebook groups to find recommended workshops; getting parts shouldn’t be too difficult.
If you’re looking for a sensible choice for around 15k, you’ll likely end up with a Myvi or a Corolla, both of which are perfectly fine options too.
