First stick shift car

Would this be a good learning car? I only understand shifting up and not fully down yet.

In my opinion, the Fiesta ST has a very user-friendly stock clutch. It’s likely the easiest manual transmission car I’ve driven. So yes, it would be an excellent choice for someone just starting out!

I learned to drive stick on my Fiesta ST, and it was fairly easy. The clutch is light, making it easier to learn on. The transition from 1st to 2nd can be a bit rough at first, but with practice, you’ll get the hang of it. As for the best year to buy…

The 2014-2015 Fiesta STs have a more reliable EVAP system and a more aggressive suspension setup. However, they are more prone to axle shaft leaks due to a different seal design.

The 2017+ models feature Ford Sync 3 with Apple CarPlay, while older models have Sync 2, which doesn’t support it. They also lose a bit of the interior ambient lighting in the glovebox area.

The 2018+ models come with a backup camera.

If you’re planning to daily the car, I’d recommend a 2017-2019 for the improved infotainment and more comfortable suspension. The 2016 model is also a good choice if you don’t mind missing Apple CarPlay. I’ve highlighted the key year-to-year changes, but there are other differences worth noting if you’re interested in a deeper look. Overall, there aren’t any years I would consider a hard pass, but the later models are more comfortable and feature-rich for daily driving.

You’re very welcome! I’m glad the info was helpful, and it’s great to hear you’re leaning towards the 2017 model. It sounds like your cousin’s Fiesta ST is a beast on those hill turns — it’s definitely a fun, agile car! The Fiesta ST is indeed known for its rally-inspired roots and track-worthy performance, making it an awesome choice for those looking for a sporty, versatile ride. It should definitely offer you better handling and cornering than your 03 or cruiser! Enjoy the experience when you get behind the wheel!

I drove it home when I bought it, never drove stick shift other than a Logitech sim

I have a 2019 Fiesta ST, and it’s incredibly easy to drive manually. It has assisted acceleration in first and reverse, so all you need to do is clutch in, shift to first, and slowly release the clutch while hovering over the gas. The car will start moving on its own, allowing you to ease into the gas. Plus, it has hill assist, so when you’re on an incline, you have about 10 seconds after releasing the brake before the car starts to roll back. Compared to my 96 SL2, 98 Sierra, 86 Bronco, 07 Versa, and even my 18 Focus SE, this is by far the easiest car to learn on and drive.

Absolutely! I learned to drive manual with my Fiesta too, and it’s definitely one of the easiest cars to learn on. Once you get the hang of it, I highly recommend adding a short shifter. It improves the shifting experience and makes it even more fun to drive!

I live in Ireland, so I’ve always driven manual cars. My 2019 ST is my third car, and it’s definitely the easiest one to drive smoothly. The clutch is very light with a clear bite point, and the gear throws are light, short, and notch into place nicely. It takes very little effort to drive smoothly, and the car is really forgiving.

I’ll be teaching my daughter starting this week, so I hope so! I honestly think the Fiesta ST is one of the easiest manual cars I’ve ever driven. The clutch is forgiving, and the car is small and light. Plus, the built-in hill assist is a great feature for beginners.
