E85 in a Ford Fiesta

2019 Ford Fiesta SE

As you can read by the title… I apparently “F’ed” up. I usually put E87 but went to a gas station I never go too and put E85. Now my check engine light is on. After trying to find some answers on google there isn’t an clear “yes” or “no” to putting E85 in a Ford Fiesta. What do I do?

The engine should be able to handle it, but it will run poorly because the ignition and injection aren’t tuned for E85. It should improve significantly once the engine is warm, though.

You basically have two options: either drain most of it from the tank and refill with regular fuel to reduce it to E20 or less, or get an E85 module (around €300) to make your car compatible.

E87 isn’t a thing. Regular 87 octane fuel contains up to 10% ethanol, while E85 has 85% ethanol, which is why your car is running poorly. You can safely use E15 (15% ethanol) fuel in these cars without any issues.

If it were my car, I would drain the tank and refill it with 87.

Unless the car specifies it, I know mine does, but I always fill it up with premium.

2019 Ford Fiesta is a very good car!
